With flash-based USB drives constantly growing in size (4GB to date), portable storage is taking on a new face. However, these drives are still too small for large data storage (such as movie files) and their relatively sensitive nature means they shouldn't be used for long term data storage. A tiny static discharge is all that's needed to corrupt the data or fry a controller. It's not uncommon for USB drives or other forms of flash media (including CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SD, MMC, etc) to bust for no apparent reason.

Steve's Digicams heeft een blik geworpen op Transcends Digital Album, een draagbare harddisk met een capaciteit van 20GB die foto's en mp3-bestanden kan afspelen. Aan de bovenkant en zijkant zitten cardreaders voor verschillende flash-kaartformaten, waarmee digitale foto's naar de Digital Album kunnen worden overgebracht. De foto's kunnen bekeken worden op een 2,5" TFT-scherm, maar er is ook een tv-out aansluiting aanwezig. Een lithium-ion-accu moet ervoor zorgen dat het apparaat onderweg van voldoende stroom wordt voorzien. De accu wordt in vier uur opgeladen en blijkt in de praktijk op een lading tussen de drie en vijf uur mee te gaan.
